Different kinds of catalytic reactors exist (fixed bed, moving bed, fluidized bed and entrained bed). We study here the dynamics of a catalytic fluidized bed reactor. This problem was presented in the excellent book by W. F. Ramirez, Computational Methods for Process Simulation, Second Edition, 1997, Butterworth Heinemann, Oxford. Governing equations are given in the above mentioned book. The catalytic fluidized bed reactors are used for various applications such as the oxidation of naphthalene and ethylene and the production of alkyl chlorides. The governing equations are stiff and one must use ode23s or ode15s when solving this problem with Matlab. This is due to very rapid initial particle dynamic effects. NDSolve performs very well and the results (gas phase and particles temperatures as well as partial pressure of the reactant in the gas phase and the particles) are in agreement with those found in figure 3.17 (page 167) of the book written by Professor Ramirez who used Matlab. The users are encouraged to try different initial conditions and look for other steady states. In fact, this system pocesses three steady states (two are stable and one is unstable).
