All stars in the sky seem to differ in brightness. Brightness is in fact the energy flux (energy per unit area per unit time) received from the star. This brightness can be quantified with modern instruments. The brightness of a star is referred to in terms of magnitudes, with the lower number indicating a brighter star. This notebook introduces and develops a scale for measuring stellar brightness.
