This talk will outline new functionality in Mathematica 9 for expressing and numerically solving differential equations with discontinuities. Many common physical systems are most naturally modeled by differential equations with discrete events or discontinuities, such as a bouncing ball or a switch which is periodically turned on and off. For some systems, expressing a discontinuity is as simple as inserting a piecewise function into a differential equation. In other cases, the model may require finer control over when events occur and what corresponding action is taken. NDSolve incorporates new features which allow one to conveniently express and solve such systems.
