At Boeing, we have been developing tools for the safety analysis of new aircraft operations being introduced into the National Airspace System (NAS) as part of the FAA's NextGen initiative. NextGen covers a very wide range of improvements to the NAS, but we have focused our attention on closely spaced parallel operations (CSPO) that take advantage of a standard for aircraft navigation performance called Required Navigation Performance (RNP). This capability shifts a large part of the responsibility to maintain a prescribed trajectory from the air traffic controllers to the aircraft itself. We have been using Mathematica as an integral part of our analysis toolbox, using it for fast-time simulations of aircraft on approaches to parallel runways. We will discuss a particular aspect of this analysis related to the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), required on all aircraft that carry more than 19 passengers.
