The DSolve function provides exact solutions for a variety of ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and differential-algebraic equations. We will begin by giving an introduction to this functionality and then describe some recent enhancements to DSolve. These include the solution of the Cauchy problem for first-order partial differential equations and improvements to linear ordinary differential equations based on the new special functions (Spheroidal, Kelvin, etc.), which will be available in Mathematica 6.0. Finally, exact solutions for the family of fifty Painlevè equations in the context of DSolve will be discussed.
