In neurosurgical interventional procedures, such as deep brain stimulation for Parkinson patients, computer assistance is needed to provide accurate and real-time tracking of tool tips and with that, minimize the risk of brain damage. Based on 3D volume data acquired by an intraoperative MRI, the surgeon can get real-time insight in the position of these tools. Though, because intraoperative MRI has its limitations at the moment, the data is not detailed enough to show all relevant brain structures in detail. The outline of the coarser structures is evident, but the fine detail could only be added through combination of this data with a detailed 3D digital brain atlas or earlier acquired high-resolution data.
