This two-part article is intended to give an introduction to the Mathematica software, developed byWolfram Research, Inc. Rather than systematically going through the elements of Mathematica, we give several examples of applications. Most of the examples are related to results given by Ramanujan, whilst a few at the end of Part 2 relate to the geography, demography, and economy of India. We hope that the examples will provide an overview of the uses of Mathematica and an insight into the exciting possibilities that it offers. The second part of the article will appear later.
