Substantial discussion is underway in the mathematics education and mathematics communities concerning calculus pedagogy and curriculum, and there is considerable momentum for a national reform of the college calculus curriculum. Prominent mathematicians have elected to become involved in this process, and are aware of the immensity and importance of the enterprise. ... A brief summary of national hata alone provides compelling documentation of the need for change. ... Surveys suggest that students are rarely asked to deal with "higher-level" problems, and that "pencil and paper algebraic manipulations are the order of the day." It is no small wonder that reform follows.
