Symbolic Circuit Analysis Using Mathematica

Symbolic techniques play an important role in circuit analysis and design. The symbolic expression of network characteristics offers convenience for frequency response analysis, sensitivity computation and fault diagnosis, among others. However, to write an efficient symbolic analysis program is not an easy task. Many papers and textbooks concerning symbolic analysis algorithms and implementations have been published. In the past years, on the other hand, a number of mathematical computer software packages have been developed and widely used in research and education. These packages, for examples Mathematica, usually possess powerful symbolic manipulation capacity, permitting symbolic circuit analysis to be greatly simplified. In this paper, we report how to perform symbolic circuit analysis with Mathematica. After a brief introduction to the basic principle of symbolic circuit analysis, a Mathematica implementation is discussed. Two examples are then provided to illustrate the results obtained by the program. The program list is given in the appendix.
