This notebook gives physical chemistry students an introduction to the partition function for vibrational and rotational energy. HCl is used as an example, and the notebook can be used in conjunction with a laboratory exercise to measure the rotational and vibrational spectrum of HCl and DCl. Data for other molecules is included and questions for self-study are included.
