Description

Dynamic simulation of a distillation column with 32 stages is performed. We consider that the activity coefficients of the cyclohexane – heptane binary mixture are given by Wilson’s model. We find the steady state mole fractions and temperatures in all stages when the reflux ratio is equal to 3. We then perform a step in the reflux ratio (we take a reflux ratio equal to 1.5). We plot the dynamic behaviour of the mole fractions and temperatures in all stages. This problem is an excellent opportunity to find out how Mathematica's function NDSolve can readily solve complex differential algebraic systems of equations (DAEs). This computation was inspired from a Matlab program available at the Nonlinear Model Database by John Hedengren (University of Texas).
