An approach to inverse finite-element-analysis has been demonstrated using the symbolic computation language Mathematica. The forward calculation of two-dimensional finite elements is performed with symbolic shape parameters. This results in symbolically-expressed slutions such as potential distributions as functions of the shape variables. Because the calculated distributions are explicitly given as functions of the shape parameters, the shape optimization can be directly achieved uing the resulting symbolic expressions. Preliminary experimental resuls aiming at shape opimization are shown.
