Topology 1
Author

Alex Suciu
Organization: Northeastern University
Department: Mathematics
Education level

Graduate
Objectives

To develop geometric intuition, with an emphasis on how to use algebraic tools to resolve topological questions.
Materials

Basic Topology by M. A. Armstrong (Springer-Verlag, UTM, corrected 4th printing, 1994)
Description

This graduate course provides an introduction to Topology -- covering some of the basics of point-set topology, algebraic topology, and geometric topology.

A freshman undergraduate student taking this course wrote a Java applet that implements the algorithm for classifying surfaces discussed in class. It is available at http://mystic.math.neu.edu/inikolov/Surfaces/Surfaces.html

Topics:
  • Compactness
  • Connectedness
  • Fundamental group
  • Triangulations
  • Graphs
  • Surfaces
  • Simplicial homology
  • Covering spaces
