Description

The Voigt profile function is the convolution of a Gaussian and a Lorentzian function. What makes it interesting is the wide range of contexts in which it is used, and--relevant to practical numerical algorithms--the numerous ways it can be computed. In this column I summarize the features of five practical techniques I have encountered for computing the Voigt function efficiently and with controllable accuracy.
