An Algorithm in Finding Partial Volumes of 3-D 20-Node Elements in Localization Analysis

An efficient and simple algorithm is formulated in finding partial volumes of three-dimensional 20-node (quadratic) elements, with the eight-node bricks as a special case, for localization analysis. The algorithm transforms volume integrals to line integrals where the integrals are expressed in analytic or semi-analytic forms using a symbolic manipulation program. Results of several examples using the algorithm are compared with results from analytic geometry with excellent agreement.
