A Tour through the AbstractAlgebra Packages

Central College
Download talk materials:
This session is intended to acquaint users with a suite of packages whose focus is
abstract algebra. These enable the user to define and work with groups, rings, fields, and
morphisms between these structures. There are a large number of built-in groups, rings,
and morphisms as well as a large collection of functions to act on them. This project has
been in the works for a number of years and will first be made publicly available at this
session. It will also be packaged with a book called Exploring Abstract Algebra with
Mathematica(Springer-Verlag, fall 1998), which is a series of group and ring
laboratory notebooks and a user's guide to the packages written by Ken Levasseur
and myself. The session will give an overview of the packages and illustrate the
capabilities, in particular highlighting the use of visualization to help understand
algebraic concepts.
