A Royal Road: Up Multiplication Mountain

This paper argues that it is easier to learn the multiplication table at a 45-degree angle to the usual horizontal-to-vertical method by working off the main diagonal of squares of numbers, the diagonal values playing the role of the "royal road." The diagonal is extended to a "hairpin turn" road or "republic road."
